Perserverance

I had thought to write about each of the 7 Tenets of Tang Soo Do one per week in order but Perseverance found it’s way to the top of the list this week all by itself.  This is probably a lesson in itself in that the 7 Tenets are all equally important and the order they are listed in isn’t necessarily important.

Perseverance • 인내

per·se·ver·ance noun \ˌpər-sə-ˈvir-ən(t)s\

: the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult

:  continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition :  the action or condition or an instance of persevering :  steadfastness

W.C. Fields quipped, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.” Likewise,  Albert Einstein wrote, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.   So when is perseverance a good thing and not a sign of insanity? Tempo, Ryu Pa, and Learning to Breath

Today’s class focused a bit on the tempo and cadence in hyung.  Some good discussion on which parts are expected to be done a specific way and which parts are open to individual interpretation.  Interesting in part because I know that I often tend to want to do hyung at just a slightly slower cadence than the group when doing them together.  We spent some time on doing hyung considering them as a series of fighting sequences and timing them accordingly. New Year’s Day 2015

Aside from working at home on my day off, as usual, I’m working in some basic kicking drills towards the 20,000 today to start the New Year.  The plan was to do them first thing this morning but the hot tub was at 64° and in need of topping off before it would heat.  Now that it’s back up to a cozy 104° it’s time to bring the burn!

WaveMasterDoing kicks “in the air” isn’t exactly making my knee happy.  I should probably just start thinking about a good time for that replacement surgery my orthopedic surgeon threatened me with now.  Hopefully it’ll be better kicking an actual target once the WaveMaster arrives to decorate my living room (or wherever it ends up until the spring thaw and training outdoors)…

Tang Soo!
