Today started out normally enough.\u00a0 Coffee, shower, shave, dress for work, more coffee to go.\u00a0 Things didn’t start to go downhill until the colorful red and blue lights lit up behind me on the way to work. First off, kudos to the trooper for being a consummate professional and making an unpleasant situation as palatable as possible.\u00a0 Turns out he’s from my home town. Go figure.<\/p>\n
It seems that DMV had neglected to inform me that they had suspended my car’s registration\u00a0over some vague insurance issue.\u00a0\u00a0 According to his fancy-schmancy license plate reading computer, my insurance had been cancelled and my registration suspended as a result.\u00a0 That came as a surprise to me as I’ve had the same insurance for ages and had just made this month’s payment on New Year’s Eve.\u00a0 Through the\u00a0geeky wonder of\u00a0a phone app, I was even able to confirm that my policy was happily in force with no sign of having been cancelled.\u00a0 Nonetheless, driving with a suspended registration isn’t an infraction that a LEO can use discretion on; it’s an automatic misdemeanor summons.\u00a0 Hello, Bantam courthouse!<\/p>\n
So as I sat there in my car that couldn’t be driven to work or back home waiting for a ride somewhere<\/em>, I called DMV to see if I could sort this out.\u00a0 To say that DMV’s music on hold is hideous would be a gross understatement.<\/p>\n Eventually my call was answered by a very helpful gentleman by the name of Nigel.\u00a0 I’m unsure how such a helpful individual came to be employed by DMV but, hey,\u00a0never look a gift horse in the mouth.\u00a0 Nigel was able to trace the problem to some sort of hiccup back in June when they’d received a cancellation notice from my insurance carrier\u00a0immediately followed by a reinstatement.\u00a0 He couldn’t understand why my registration had been suspended but that might also explain why I never received any notice in the mail.\u00a0 It doesn’t appear that any was ever sent out.<\/p>\n My insurance being current and without any actual lapses, Nigel was able to immediately revoke the suspension.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the reinstatement\u00a0will take a day or two to percolate through all the state’s computer systems — particularly the law enforcement systems attached to those tireless license plate cameras. So here I am stuck at home because\u00a0I’m still not supposed to drive my car\u00a0until I receive something in writing from DMV proving my registration has, once more, been blessed by the gods of administrivia.
